The Senior Center in Valparaiso, also known as the Valparaiso Community Building, will be preserved and maintained – thanks to the generosity of two local businessmen, a collection taken up through the water bill and a donation from a Destin resident.

A total of about $50,000 in in-kind work and monetary donations were pledged. The money will be contributed over the next two years.

The money and services will be used to re-roof the building. Timberman roofing will do the repairs for free – an in-kind contribution of $23,500. The rest of the money will be used to maintain the building or fund additional improvements.

A collection that was solicited through February’s water bill generated $1,602.66 in donations from citizens of Valparaiso.

The roofing repairs will start “soon.” Mayor Brent Smith reported to the commissioners and the citizens at the meeting that the shingles were ordered and the project would be completed in the next couple of weeks.
