CRESTVIEW — A new symbol of history and community spirit now stands proudly in front of the Crestview History Museum, also known as the Bush House. The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution donated and planted a Liberty Tree on the museum’s grounds, replicating a historic tree that once stood on the property.
The dedication ceremony, held on July 12, 2025, paid special tribute to the late Sheila Dunning, a longtime Okaloosa County commercial horticulture agent who was celebrated for her expertise and dedication to local youth and professionals.
The Liberty Tree, a cypress, was planted as both a connection to the nation’s rich heritage and a reminder of the importance of preserving the environment. The Mayor’s Advisory Council honored Dunning by dedicating a tree in her memory, highlighting her 22 years of service and the lasting impact she had on the community.
The planting of this Liberty Tree stands not only as a reminder of the importance of preserving our history and nurturing our environment but also as a tribute to Sheila Dunning’s legacy,” said the City in a news release
City officials note that the tree is more than just a historic emblem; the Liberty Tree stands as a living symbol of resilience and community dedication. It serves to inspire residents to continue fostering both environmental stewardship and a deep respect for local history.
