CRESTVIEW — A standoff on South Ferdon Boulevard ended in tragedy early Saturday morning when a man armed with a firearm was shot and killed by Crestview police officers.
According to the Crestview Police Department, officers spotted a suspicious vehicle just before 2 a.m. near a closed business in the 1600 block of Ferdon Boulevard. Inside, they found a man who was armed and reportedly making suicidal statements.
For nearly three hours, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and convince the man to surrender peacefully. The encounter turned deadly when police say the man pointed his firearm at one of the officers, prompting police to open fire. The man was killed at the scene.
No officers were injured.
As is standard procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has been called in to lead an independent investigation into the shooting. Crestview Police officials said any further inquiries will be referred to the FDLE.
The shooting shut down Ferdon Boulevard between Duggan Avenue and Goodwin Avenue for several hours Saturday morning as investigators processed the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the man’s name.
