Tropic Watch: Okaloosa officials monitoring possible development

In Brief:

  • 🌊 Forecasters have increased the chance of tropical development in the Gulf from 20% to 40%.

  • 📍 The system could become a tropical depression by mid-to-late week if it stays offshore and conditions remain favorable.

  • 📣 Okaloosa County officials, including Public Safety Director Patrick Maddox, are monitoring the system and plan to issue updates.

NICEVILLE — An area in the northern Gulf that weather forecasters said had a 20% chance of development had been upgraded to a 40% chance of development, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Late Monday, forecasters said that a trough of low pressure currently located in the Atlantic could move westward across the Florida Peninsula and into the Gulf, where it could encounter favorable conditions for development.

“Environmental conditions appeared generally favorable for additional development if the system remains offshore,” said forecasters at the NHC. “…a tropical depression could form as the system moves across the northeastern and north-central Gulf by the middle to latter part of this week.”

On Monday afternoon, Okaloosa County Public Safety Director Patrick Maddox stated in a memo that county officials are monitoring the situation and will provide updates as they receive information from the NHC.

Maddox also notes there is low confidence in where this system will go if the storm undergoes further development.

If the storm were to develop, it would be the fourth-named storm of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season, taking the name Dexter.
