Red Cross Northwest Florida Urges Residents to Prepare For Hurricane Season

With the 2025 hurricane season beginning June 1, the American Red Cross Northwest Florida Chapter is stepping up its readiness efforts and calling on residents to do the same during Hurricane Preparedness Week.

Executive Director Terri Jenkins said the chapter has been working behind the scenes for months to prepare shelters, stock supplies, and train volunteers across the region.

โ€œWe never stop preparing for disasters because we know they can happen anytime, anywhere,โ€ Jenkins said.

In a message to local media, Jenkins added that the Red Cross hopes to raise awareness this week and remains available for calls to answer questions.

What the Red Cross Is Doing

The chapterโ€™s logistics team has inspected vehicles and equipment, coordinated with local agencies, and organized emergency response volunteers. These efforts help ensure access to shelter, food, and relief supplies during major storms.

The organization is also actively recruiting volunteers to support shelters, assist with health services, and respond through its Disaster Action Team. Free online training is available at redcross.org/volunteer.

How You Can Prepare

The Red Cross urges residents to create evacuation plans, gather supplies, and sign up for local emergency alerts. The Red Cross Emergency app also offers real-time updates, shelter locations, and safety guidance in English and Spanish.

โ€œIt only takes one storm to change someoneโ€™s life forever,โ€ Jenkins said.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1.
