WASHINGTON — Congressman Jimmy Patronis and Senator Rick Scott introduced resolutions in Congress on Tuesday to designate Oct. 14 as a “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk,” honoring the late conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA.
The House and Senate measures were filed days after Kirk was shot and killed in an act of political violence on Sept. 10. call for a permanent day of reflection on his life and legacy. Patronis’s House resolution is co-sponsored by more than a dozen Republican members, including Florida Reps. Anna Paulina Luna, Cory Mills, Gus Bilirakis, Maria Salazar, Aaron Bean, and Carlos Gimenez.
Kirk, who would have turned 32 on Oct. 14, rose to national prominence as a free-speech advocate on college campuses, a bestselling author, and the leader of one of the nation’s most prominent conservative youth organizations, according to the Patronis office.
In a statement, Patronis described Kirk as “more than a conservative thought leader.”
“He was a fearless warrior of free speech, faith, and the principles that make America the greatest country in the world,” Patronis said in a news release. “By honoring his life with a National Day of Remembrance, we ensure that Charlie’s legacy lives on, inspiring future generations to stand boldly for freedom and the Constitution.”
Scott, who introduced the Senate version, called Kirk “a magnetic leader, a loving father and husband, and a friend and inspiration to so many.”
“Charlie worked to make our nation a better place in his 31 years before he was lost in an evil act of political violence, and will leave a lasting legacy on our nation,” Scott said in a statement.
The resolution outlines Kirk’s work founding Turning Point USA, his bestselling books, and his efforts to grow civic engagement among young Americans. It urges schools, civic groups, and communities to mark the day with “programs, activities, prayers, and ceremonies” that reflect the values Kirk championed.
The measures now await consideration in both chambers. To pass in the House of Representatives and Senate, the resolution needs a simple majority.
