Okaloosa County, Fla. — The Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) has announced its 2025 Sunshine State Scholars, highlighting the academic achievements of students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Penelope Gordon from Fort Walton Beach High School and Emma Michel from Niceville High School have been selected as the district’s primary scholars. Adonaiah White from Crestview High School has been named the district’s alternate scholar.
The Sunshine State Scholars Program is an annual initiative by the Florida Department of Education that recognizes the top 11th-grade students in each district who demonstrate exceptional aptitude and commitment to STEM fields. Each district selects its most outstanding STEM students to participate in a two-day program in Orlando. During the event, students have the opportunity to network with STEM-focused employers and college representatives, explore educational and career pathways, and be formally honored for their achievements and aspirations.
Superintendent Marcus Chambers praised the students for their accomplishments and potential. “Penelope, Emma, and Adonaiah exemplify the talent, determination, and curiosity that drive innovation and discovery,” Chambers said. “We are incredibly proud of their achievements and can’t wait to see the impact they’ll make in the future. Programs like the Sunshine State Scholars allow us to celebrate these students and provide opportunities that will help guide their next steps in STEM education and careers.”
The program encourages students to engage with colleges and employers in STEM fields, attend workshops, and participate in hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding of scientific and technological concepts. Scholars are also recognized for their leadership and commitment to applying their knowledge in ways that benefit their communities and the broader society.
In addition to celebrating individual excellence, the Sunshine State Scholars Program serves as a platform for networking, mentorship, and inspiration for other students interested in pursuing STEM pathways. By highlighting the achievements of top-performing students, the program aims to motivate peers and support the development of Florida’s future workforce in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The Okaloosa County School District encourages students, families, and community members to celebrate the achievements of Penelope Gordon, Emma Michel, and Adonaiah White, and to support STEM education initiatives in local schools.
