•🧑🤝🧑 Who: Travelers looking for a unique Florida day trip
•🎯 What: A visit to Lake Jackson, historical sites, and Britton Hill
•📅 When: Anytime, as these locations are open year-round
•📍 Where: Lake Jackson, Florala, Paxton, and Britton Hill in Walton County, Florida
•❓ Why: To explore lesser-known Florida sites with history, nature, and a quirky geographical landmark
On this day trip, I want to take you to the Lake Jackson area to see some sites that might not appear on your normal tourist guides, which is why they are the perfect places for locals to head for the day.
Lake Jackson is about an hour from Niceville and boasts some historical monuments and at least one kitschy achievement you can brag to your friends about.
The lake is pretty big – about 500 acres and allows swimming, boating, and other activities, and a place for 28 RVs if you want to stay the night.
On the banks of the lake, beside the mangrove-like oak trees that you will be able to see as you drive across the main road into either Paxton or Florala – you’ll be able to check out two sites: A Lockheed T-33 T-Bird and a historical monument from the Seminole Wars.
The T-33 is not in excellent condition – and a separate historical marker highlights the fact that future U.S. President Andrew Jackson’s army camped here while fighting in the First Seminole War.
With enough time and a metal detector, you’ll find a few artifacts from that period.
On the drive out of Florala and Paxton back to Niceville, as you pass by some very old buildings, you’ll be able to get a bucket list item: visiting the highest elevation place in Florida – Britton Hill.
SU “Britton Hill is right over there, but there is a park right near here.”
We put the drone up to show you just how flat this hill is… next to a couple of cattle pastures in the northern extremes of Walton County.
It’s just over 300 feet above sea level. The next lowest high point is in Washington, D.C., which at its highest point is Point Reno – 409 feet above sea level.
If you enjoy lakes and want to get away from the rush for a little bit – Lake Jackson is not a bad place to go.
