In a news release, Nelson cited personal considerations and a desire to fully support President-Elect Donald Trump’s endorsement of Former Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis in the race for Florida’s 1st Congressional District.

“After much consideration and prayer, we don’t feel like this is the right time to run a proper campaign,” Nelson said. “We fully support President Donald Trump’s decision to endorse Jimmy Patronis, and I hope to work closely with him in the future to strengthen our military mission and defense base in Northwest Florida, just as I did with Congressman Matt Gaetz.”

Nelson was critically injured during his third deployment to Afghanistan in 2013, and has dedicated his post-military life to advocating for veterans and strengthening military operations in Northwest Florida. As Director of Military Affairs for Congressman Gaetz, he played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between the defense industry and the warfighter, spearheading innovation, and advancing local military missions.

Currently working in the private sector with a small defense contractor, Nelson continues to focus on supporting military innovation. A passionate public speaker, Nelson regularly shares his story of faith and resilience with audiences across the country. He resides in Santa Rosa Beach with his wife, Jennifer, and their two children, Eva and Silas.

Nelson’s decision to end his campaign shifts focus to Jimmy Patronis, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, who now has the backing of President Trump in the 2024 congressional race.

Currently, at least two other candidates with Niceville connections, Jeff Witt and Joel Rudman have announced their intentions to stay in the race.
