Dr. Joel Rudman, the state representative for Santa Rosa and Northern Okaloosa County, announced his candidacy for the U.S. congressional seat vacated by Matt Gaetz, who is expected to become Florida’s attorney general.
“This is not a decision we make lightly,” Rudman said, noting that constituents had encouraged him to run since Gaetz’s announcement. “We were gauging interest, kind of gauging our support… and it’s a decision we reached last night.”
Having been sworn into his second term in the Florida House just the day before, Rudman expressed confidence in Florida’s Republican leadership. “Florida isn’t the issue right now. President Trump needs some foot soldiers… with sharp minds and iron wills,” he stated, positioning himself as a MAGA conservative ready to carry forward Gaetz’s legacy.
Rudman emphasized his alignment with former President Trump’s policies, including securing the border, strengthening the economy, and supporting American businesses. “We are going to adopt a strong America First policy… to grow our economy, protect American workers, and secure our national interests,” he declared.
Locally, Rudman pledged to prioritize military readiness and protect the missions of NAS Pensacola, Eglin Air Force Base, and Hurlburt Field. “In terms of Northwest Florida, you’ll see job creation and a stronger military,” he said.
As for his campaign, Rudman highlighted his robust Republican voter base and deep ties to the district. “The people throughout the district… know my reputation,” he said.
When asked how his approach might differ from Gaetz’s, Rudman dismissed significant distinctions, saying, “I am a Gaetz disciple first and foremost,” Rudman said, “We have the utmost respect for the Gaetz family, Matt and Don.”
Rudman also acknowledged that his potential election would create a vacancy in the Florida House. While he did not officially endorse a successor, he mentioned a staff member, Keri Pitzer, as a potential candidate, saying, “I would certainly ask that staff member… they are highly qualified.”
Ultimately, Rudman expressed his determination to honor Gaetz’s legacy and continue the fight for Northwest Florida. “We will not be taken lightly in the U.S. House, and our voices will be heard,” he said.
