Niceville police arrested a woman after a firearm was discharged during a domestic disturbance early Saturday morning.
Investigators say the gun was fired into the ceiling toward a room where a 9-month-old child was located.
Officers later located the suspect in Shalimar, where the child and firearm were recovered.
NICEVILLE, A woman was arrested after police say a firearm was discharged inside a Niceville home during a domestic disturbance early Saturday morning.
According to the Niceville Police Department, officers responded around 5:22 a.m. on March 7 to a report of a disturbance involving a gun being fired inside a residence.
Initial reports indicated the female suspect had left the scene with a 9-month-old child, and officers were initially unable to locate her.
Investigators say the suspect, Shaniyah Monah Carmichael, arrived at the home of her estranged ex-husband at approximately 4:00 a.m. and allegedly forced her way into a bedroom while armed with a firearm.
During a struggle inside the home, the firearm discharged once.
Police say the round struck the ceiling in the direction of a room where the couple’s 9-month-old son was located at the time of the incident.
During the investigation, officers located Carmichael’s vehicle at a residence in Shalimar. Officers made contact with her at the home and placed her under arrest.
Carmichael faces several charges, including:
Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
Child neglect
Battery
Firing a weapon on residential property
Investigators later obtained and executed a search warrant at the Shalimar residence, where the child was located and returned to the father’s custody. Officers also recovered the firearm believed to have been used during the incident.
The Niceville Police Department said the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations assisted with the investigation.
Authorities say the case remains actively under investigation.
