Fort Walton Beach city officials have announced that sections of Brooks Street SE and Bay Drive SE will be closed to motor vehicle traffic on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025, to provide a safer environment for families and children participating in Halloween trick-or-treating.
The closures will be in effect from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Brooks Street SE will be closed from Waynel Circle east to Bay Drive, and Bay Drive SE will be closed from Brooks Street north to the intersection with Hollywood Boulevard. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes during this period, as access to the closed sections will be restricted to ensure pedestrian safety.
City officials stated that the closures are intended to enable children to safely participate in Halloween festivities while minimizing potential traffic hazards in high-activity residential areas. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to promote public safety during community events.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow recommended safety precautions while trick-or-treating, including:
Carrying flashlights or glow sticks to increase visibility in low-light conditions
Crossing streets at designated crosswalks and staying on sidewalks where available; if sidewalks are not present, walk against traffic.
Inspecting treats before eating and avoiding homemade or unwrapped items from unknown sources
Reminding children not to enter strangers’ homes or vehicles
Driving slowly and remaining alert in residential areas, as children in costumes may be harder to see
Watching carefully for children crossing streets, especially near intersections and driveways
In addition to road closures and safety tips, the city encourages parents and guardians to supervise children closely during trick-or-treating activities and to establish a clear route in advance. Residents planning to participate in handing out candy are reminded to keep yards well-lit and remove obstacles that could pose tripping hazards.
City officials thanked residents for their cooperation and emphasized that these temporary closures are intended to ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for all members of the community.
“We want everyone in Fort Walton Beach to enjoy Halloween safely,” a city spokesperson said. “These road closures, combined with safe trick-or-treating practices, help create a fun environment where children and families can celebrate without unnecessary risks.”
