From War Hero to Bishop: René Gracida’s Remarkable Life Remembered

In Brief:

  • René Gracida served as a WWII airman flying 32 missions
  • He became the first bishop of the Pensacola-Tallahassee Diocese in 1975
  • He later led the Diocese of Corpus Christi for 14 years

Bishop René Henry Gracida, a World War II veteran who went on to become the first bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, has died at the age of 102.

Church leaders say Gracida passed away the morning of May 1, 2026. Bishop Mario Avilés called his death a great loss, noting his 14 years of service as bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

Gracida’s life spanned military service, religious devotion, and decades of leadership in the Catholic Church, leaving a lasting imprint in both Texas and Florida, particularly in Northwest Florida, where he helped shape the region’s Catholic identity.

✈️ From War to the Priesthood

Born June 9, 1923, in New Orleans, Gracida served during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He flew 32 combat missions as both a tail gunner and flight engineer with the 303rd Air Expeditionary Group, an experience that would define the early part of his life before turning to faith.

After the war, he pursued architecture at the University of Houston, later entering religious life in 1951 with the Order of Saint Benedict. He was ordained a priest in 1959.

⛪ Building the Church in Northwest Florida

Gracida’s most lasting regional impact came in 1975, when Pope Paul VI appointed him as the first bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee.

Installed later that year, Gracida led the diocese during its formative years, helping organize parishes, ministries, and infrastructure across a growing region that includes communities throughout the Florida Panhandle.

Before that, he served as an auxiliary bishop in Miami, further building his leadership within the Church.

📡 Expanding Influence in Texas

In 1983, Pope John Paul II appointed Gracida as bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, where he served until his retirement in 1997.

During his tenure, he expanded diocesan communications through radio and television, supported youth and education programs, and worked to address community issues, including violence in parts of Corpus Christi.

Those who worked with him described a leader who combined conviction with compassion.

“He was a gentleman, very spiritual, but also very determined,” said Jill Hundley, a longtime diocesan employee.

Others recalled his willingness to take strong public stands and his commitment to faith, education, and community outreach.

🕊️ A Long Life of Service

After retiring in 1997, Gracida remained active in retirement, known for his love of hunting and fishing.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
