Walton County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Inmate Death at Jail

An inmate held in confinement at the Walton County Jail was found unresponsive early Sunday morning and later pronounced dead, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

Jessie Raby, who was being housed in Holmes County while awaiting trial for the 2024 murders of his mother and brother, was found on the floor of his cell during a routine breakfast delivery shortly after 6 a.m.

Deputies conducted a standard 30-minute security check at 5:45 a.m. and observed Raby behaving normally, according to jail records. They saw Raby 15 minutes later lying on his back and unresponsive.

Staff immediately entered the cell and initiated emergency procedures. A jail nurse discovered foreign objects obstructing Raby’s airway, including a cloth, a sock, and pieces of toilet paper. Staff administered CPR until EMS arrived. Raby was pronounced dead at 6:37 a.m.

Investigation Ongoing

The District 1 Medical Examiner responded to the facility and will conduct an autopsy, and Raby’s family has been notified.

The Sheriff’s Office said the incident was captured on jail surveillance cameras and is under investigation. While the cause of death is pending autopsy results, early findings suggest Raby’s death may have been self-inflicted.
