DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — The Walton County Commission voted Tuesday to designate Highway 393 North as Charlie Kirk Parkway in honor of the late conservative activist who was killed last month.

Commissioner Danny Glidewell proposed the motion, emphasizing the community’s desire to recognize Kirk’s influence while avoiding the financial burden of changing residents’ addresses. The measure passed unanimously following no discussion and a brief public comment section.

Chair Donna Johns noted that the vote came on what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday. “Thank you for bringing this up,” she said before calling for the vote.

Among those who spoke in support was Melissa Forberg, a Walton County resident, who commended the board for the recognition.

This, as you said, would have been Charlie Kirk’s 32nd birthday,” she said. “He was also awarded this afternoon the Presidential Medal of Freedom. So this is a high honor.”

The new designation will retain Highway 393’s existing numbering, ensuring no address changes for residents along the route.

Kirk, described by Glidewell as “a wonderful American who had a great influence on a lot of people.”
