Sail Date for Okaloosa’s Newest Artificial Reef – the SS United States – Delayed

The planned move of the SS United States, the legendary 1952 ocean liner, from its longtime berth in Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama, has been delayed. Originally scheduled to set off on Nov. 15, 2024, at low tide, the relocation was postponed to allow additional time for logistical adjustments. Okaloosa County officials, who are overseeing parts of the project, confirmed they are also monitoring a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico that could complicate safe transit.

“There is considerable interest in the SS United States and her move from Pier 82,” an Okaloosa County spokesperson said, noting that coordinating such a large, multi-faceted operation involves collaboration across multiple agencies. A new departure date has not yet been set, though officials assured that updates will be provided as the plan progresses.

Once the vessel arrives in Mobile, contractors will embark on a 12-month process of removing hazardous materials and ensuring the ship is environmentally safe. After modifications, the SS United States will be submerged upright to form an artificial reef, aiming to benefit marine ecosystems roughly 20 miles south of Destin and Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Alongside this underwater initiative, Okaloosa County is partnering with the SS United States Conservancy on a museum project in Destin-Fort Walton Beach. The land-based museum will honor the ship’s history and legacy, displaying iconic elements like the vessel’s signature funnels and radar mast alongside a comprehensive collection from the Conservancy’s archives.
