Niceville Good Neighbor: Lucretia Waskow

In a community that prides itself on its “Nice” moniker, few individuals embody that spirit as tirelessly as Lucretia Waskow. This month, Ryan Cabaniss State Farm is proud to announce Waskow as the recipient of the Niceville Good Neighbor Award, in recognition of her unwavering dedication to the students, educators, and families of the Okaloosa County School District.

Nominated by her colleague Carol Szklarski, who noted that Waskow “gives 110% every day,” the award highlights a career defined by service and a personal life rooted deeply in the heart of the Emerald Coast.

A Leader with a Student-Centered Heart

As the Assistant Principal at Ruckel Middle School, Waskow has become a staple of local education. Her leadership philosophy is simple but profound: be visible, be accessible, and always do what is best for the student. Whether she is navigating complex Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes or supporting the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to ensure no child falls through the cracks, Waskow’s focus remains on individual success.

“I believe strongly in being a visible and accessible leader,” Waskow said. “I strive to create an environment where all individuals can thrive, ensuring everyone—from students to staff—feels valued and supported.”

A Banner Year of Recognition

The Good Neighbor Award is the latest in a string of prestigious accolades for Waskow. In 2024, she was named the Okaloosa Assistant Principal of the Year, a title she followed up by being named the Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year for the entire State of Florida.

Despite the state-level recognition, Waskow remains focused on the local impact. Since making Niceville her permanent home in 2014, following her husband’s retirement as an Air Force officer, she has viewed her role through the lens of both a professional and a parent. Having put both of her children through the Okaloosa County School District, she possesses a unique, firsthand understanding of the community’s needs.

Building Bridges in the Community

For Waskow, education is a team sport. She is known for her efforts to strengthen community partnerships and her work alongside teachers to foster innovative instructional practices. By prioritizing safety, well-being, and open communication with families, she has helped turn Ruckel Middle School into a model of collaborative excellence.

“Being nominated by a colleague is especially meaningful,” Waskow shared, expressing her gratitude for the nomination. “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the Niceville community each day with dedication, positivity, and a genuine commitment to helping others succeed.”

The Ryan Cabaniss State Farm Good Neighbor Award is presented monthly to local citizens who go above and beyond to make Niceville a better place to live. With her track record of excellence and her heart for service, Lucretia Waskow is a neighbor everyone is proud to have.
