In a daring overnight rescue operation, firefighters from Walton County Fire Rescue (WCFR) and Eglin Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services collaborated to save a resident trapped in a burning home in the Villa Tasso community.
The emergency unfolded at 2:14 a.m. when the Walton County Sheriff’s Office communications center received a call reporting a structure fire on Winfield Street – near the Okaloosa-Walton County line. Upon arrival, WCFR firefighters saw a single-wide mobile home engulfed in smoke and flames, and got reports a man was trapped inside.
Despite challenging conditions inside the residence due to hoarding, firefighters managed to breach a wall and reach the back bedroom where the patient was trapped.
Eglin Air Force Base Fire & Emergency Services played a crucial role in assisting with the rescue, ensuring prompt medical attention for the patient, who they say suffered from smoke inhalation.
The patient was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Tragically, the fire killed a dog that was inside the home.
Fire Chief Austin Pugh commended the firefighters for their swift response and life-saving efforts, emphasizing the importance of their continuous training and readiness for such emergencies. The dedication and professionalism exhibited by the responders underscored their commitment to serving the community.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, with initial indications suggesting it originated on the front porch of the residence.
