DEVELOPING: Niceville PD shut down part of John Sims Parkway after a traffic crash. Here’s what we know:

A traffic CRASH on John Sims Parkway (State Road 20) closed all lanes of the major thoroughfare for at least five hours Monday morning as law enforcement officers investigated a chaotic scene. Sources close to Niceville Police with information regarding the crash say the crash resulted in a fatality and the incident is currently being investigated as a homicide.

The incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. near the intersection of John Sims Parkway and Partin Drive. Sources close to the Niceville Police Department said at least one truck was involved in the collision. The vehicle crashed into a tree on the property of Baldwin Turf Shop, adjacent to the Okaloosa Tax Collector’s office, leaving mangled and twisted metal across the area.

Multiple witnesses at the scene stated they believed either racing or road rage was taking place prior to the crash. At this point, these claims are unverified, and we’re asking officials for verification and clarification on their accuracy.

At least eight Niceville Police officers responded to manage the investigation and route traffic around the closure. Westbound traffic on John Sims Parkway was diverted north on Partin Drive near City Hall. Turn lanes from Palm Boulevard were shut down, with vehicles re-routed through Niceville High School between Costa Union Club and Wondah Boulevard.

Niceville Police confirmed that the crash remains under active investigation. Officers at the scene said they could not release additional details, including any identities, pending further investigation and notification.
