Okaloosa County, Visit Pensacola, and CCA Florida are joining forces to deploy the SS United States as the world’s largest artificial reef, creating a major new tourism and conservation asset for the region.

Okaloosa County has partnered with Visit Pensacola and CCA Florida to transform the historic SS United States into the world’s largest artificial reef. The $2 million project, scheduled for early 2026, aims to enhance marine habitats, attract divers from around the globe, and boost tourism across Northwest Florida.

COVID Beach Shutdowns to Cost Walton County Big

A federal appeals court has ruled that Walton County must compensate private beach owners who were barred from accessing their property during COVID-19 beach shutdowns. The court ruled that the 2020 emergency ordinance constituted an unconstitutional “physical taking,” overturning a lower court decision and paving the way for landowners to recover damages and legal costs.
