An eighth-grade student at Ruckel Middle School has earned statewide recognition after scoring perfectly on a Florida math competition designed to encourage students to sharpen their skills through practice and persistence.

Dean Penberthy was named a statewide winner in the Math Nation “Show What You Know Showdown,” a competition open to Florida students in grades 6-8, as well as Geometry, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2 students. The competition ran from April 6 through May 1 and challenged students across the state to improve their math proficiency through repeated practice and testing.

His Honors Algebra teacher, Susie Watson, praised Dean’s effort and commitment throughout the school year.

“Dean has worked incredibly hard all year and has shown real commitment,” Watson said. “I’m so proud of him and excited that his effort is recognized statewide.”
