Mosquito season is back in Okaloosa County, and spray trucks are preparing to roll through neighborhoods from Destin to Crestview. Here’s when your area could be treated.

New Spray Routes Announced as Mosquito Threat Grows

In Brief:

  • 🦟 Okaloosa County released its 2026 mosquito spraying schedule for North and South County communities.
  • 🚛 Spray trucks will operate near sunset based on mosquito surveillance and weather conditions.
  • ⚠️ Officials are urging residents to eliminate standing water and protect against mosquito-borne illnesses.

Residents across Okaloosa County can expect mosquito spray trucks to begin evening treatment routes throughout the county as officials roll out the 2026 mosquito control schedule ahead of the summer rainy season.

The Okaloosa County Mosquito Control Program announced its weekly broadcast pesticide spraying schedule for both North and South Okaloosa communities, with treatments beginning at sunset and shifting when weather or equipment issues arise.

County officials say spraying operations are only conducted when justified under Florida law using mosquito population surveillance data and other approved methods.

The schedule includes regular treatment areas in communities stretching from Crestview and Baker to Destin, Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, Valparaiso, Shalimar, Holt, and Laurel Hill.

In South Okaloosa County, mosquito spray routes will rotate through heavily populated neighborhoods, including Bluewater Bay, Rocky Bayou, Ocean City, Mary Esther, and Wynnehaven Beach throughout the week.

Officials stressed that spraying is only one piece of the county’s broader mosquito mitigation effort. The county also monitors roughly 2,000 larvicide treatment sites and stocks more than 750 ponds and standing water locations with Gambusia fish, which feed on mosquito larvae.

Health officials are urging residents to remember the county’s “SWAT” mosquito prevention guidance:

  • Stay inside during peak mosquito hours at dusk and dawn
  • Wear long sleeves and protective clothing outdoors
  • Apply insect repellents containing DEET or similar ingredients
  • Turn over standing water where mosquitoes can breed

The Florida Department of Health and county mosquito control officials also warned residents to protect pets and livestock from mosquito-borne illnesses.

Horse owners are encouraged to vaccinate animals against Eastern Equine Encephalitis, while dog owners should maintain heartworm prevention treatments during peak mosquito months, which typically run from August through October.

County mosquito spray trucks generally begin operating about one hour before sunset and may also operate near sunrise when mosquito activity is highest.

Residents can view detailed treatment maps and schedules through the county mosquito control website.
