The Okaloosa County School Board approved the appointment of Amy Morgan as the new principal of Destin Elementary School at their board meeting Monday night.
Okaloosa County Superintendent Marcus Chambers nominated Morgan, currently the assistant principal at the K-8 Lewis School in Valparaiso, for the job. Morgan has served as a teacher and administrator for almost two decades and holds a specialist degree from Florida State University. During her time as a teacher she won awards for Intensive Reading Teacher of the Year and Tecacher of the Year – as well as Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year. Mayer taught at Destin Middle School and Plew Elementary School before becoming an administrator.
In her remarks to the board, Morgan expressed deep gratitude to her family, colleagues, and mentors.
She thanked her husband, Brian Morgan, for his “constant support, encouragement and willingness to always listen,” and credited him for encouraging her to “continually grow and become the best leader I can be.” She also acknowledged her parents and daughters for reminding her “every day why excellent public education matters so deeply.”
Morgan spoke fondly of her time at Lewis School, thanking her “Lewis family” for trusting her to walk alongside them as they worked together to “provide meaningful opportunities” for students. She noted that Lewis will always hold a special place in her heart.
Morgan said she is excited to join the Destin Elementary’s team and praised the work of now Niceville High School Principal Amy Meyer, and the staff for building a “beautiful legacy” at the school.
She highlighted Destin Elementary’s designation as a School of Excellence, noting that it has brought “tremendous opportunities for the students of Destin.” Morgan pledged to work hard to continue that legacy and to partner with staff and families as the school continues to “inspire, challenge and empower every child to reach their fullest potential.”
Morgan also pointed to Destin Elementary as a model of what strong community backing for public education can accomplish. She specifically referenced the new third-through-fifth-grade classroom wing, funded through the half-cent sales tax, which will provide “much-needed space” and allow students to complete their elementary years together on the campus.
She thanked the school board and Superintendent Mr. Chambers for their “continued support of Destin Elementary and public education throughout the] county” and said the school looks forward to celebrating the completion of the new wing with them.
“Destin Elementary is a beautiful example of what strong community support for public education can accomplish,” Morgan said, adding that she is “excited to be part of that dream.”
The meeting concluded with applause and congratulations from board members and those in attendance, including Morgan’s family, colleagues, and supporters from both Lewis and Destin Elementary.
