One of Northwest Florida’s most successful and respected football coaches is officially headed to the Hall of Fame.

The Okaloosa County School District announced Monday that Baker School Head Football Coach Matt Brunson has been inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, recognizing a coaching career that has spanned more than three decades and helped shape generations of student-athletes across the region.

Brunson’s induction places him among the most accomplished figures in Florida high school athletics after compiling a remarkable 288-85 career coaching record, 22 state playoff appearances, 13 district championships, and two state championships.

Among those achievements was Baker School’s historic 2020 football state championship, the first football state title won by an Okaloosa County school in 25 years.

For many in Baker, however, Brunson’s story began long before he ever became head coach.

A graduate of Baker School himself, Brunson played during one of the most dominant stretches in Florida high school football history. He helped lead the Gators to three consecutive state championships from 1983 through 1985 while contributing to the program’s legendary 42-game winning streak.

After graduating from Baker, Brunson continued his football career at Troy State University, where he earned a national championship in 1987 before eventually returning home to begin coaching.

Over the years, Brunson built winning programs at Baker High School, Vernon High School, and Crestview High School, earning a reputation not only for victories on Friday nights but also for developing disciplined, accountable, and character-driven athletes.

During his 32 seasons coaching in Okaloosa County, Brunson guided teams to 14 Final Four appearances and eight state championship game appearances, further cementing his status as one of the area’s most influential football figures.

Okaloosa County Superintendent Marcus Chambers praised Brunson’s impact both on and off the field.

“Coach Matt Brunson’s induction into the FHSAA Hall of Fame is a tremendous honor and a reflection of the lasting impact he has made on generations of student-athletes throughout Northwest Florida,” Chambers said.

“His commitment to excellence, discipline, and leadership has helped shape not only championship football programs, but also young men of character.”

Baker School Principal Mike Martello said Brunson’s influence extends far beyond wins and championships.

“Coach Brunson’s legacy at Baker School is truly extraordinary,” Martello said. “He has built a culture rooted in discipline, pride, and excellence, while always placing students first.”

School district officials said the Hall of Fame recognition reflects both Brunson’s success on the field and his decades-long commitment to mentoring young athletes throughout Northwest Florida.

For Baker fans and generations of former players, the honor simply places Brunson where many already believed he belonged.
