NICEVILLE, Fla. — About 150 students at Niceville High School got a crash course in adulthood this week, complete with bills, budgets, and tough financial decisions.
The Okaloosa Public Schools Foundation hosted its 4th Annual “Reality Check” simulation, an immersive one-day event designed to teach real-world money management skills. Students were assigned careers, salaries, and family situations, then tasked with navigating everyday expenses like housing, utilities, insurance, and communications.
The exercise forced students to make practical financial choices, balancing their budgets while moving through interactive stations that mirrored real-life costs.
The event was funded by Origin Bank and supported by a wide range of community partners, including local businesses, financial institutions, and military personnel. Volunteers helped run the simulation, guiding students through decisions that many adults face daily.
Participants learned firsthand how quickly expenses add up and how planning can make a difference.
Superintendent Marcus Chambers said the experience plays a critical role in preparing students for life beyond graduation.
“Experiences like Reality Check are invaluable in helping our students understand the real-world responsibilities that come with adulthood,” Chambers said. “We are grateful to our community partners for investing in our students and helping prepare them for future success.”
The program has expanded over the years, with students from Crestview, Choctawhatchee, Laurel Hill, and Fort Walton Beach high schools participating in previous events, highlighting its growing impact across Okaloosa County.
Organizers say initiatives like Reality Check are part of a broader effort to equip students with the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed after high school, not just academically, but financially.
