👤 Who: South Walton Mosquito District and South Walton residents
🪰 What: Free Yellow Fly Kits to help reduce nuisance yellow fly activity around homes
📅 When: April 1 – June 30, Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
📍 Where: South Walton County, Florida
❓ Why: Yellow flies are painful daytime biters and difficult to control, so the traps help reduce their presence near homes.
As spring arrives along the Emerald Coast, residents in South Walton can expect sunshine, blooming flowers, and the return of yellow flies.
To help residents manage the annual nuisance, the South Walton Mosquito District will begin distributing free Yellow Fly Kits on April 1 to qualifying residents.
Officials say the kits are designed to help reduce yellow fly activity near homes during the insects’ peak season, which typically runs from early spring through early summer.
Yellow flies, scientifically known as Diachlorus ferrugatus, are common across the Florida Panhandle. The insects are known for their painful daytime bites and are typically found near shaded tree lines, wooded areas, and wetlands.
Unlike mosquitoes, female yellow flies cut the skin using specialized mouthparts to obtain blood needed for egg production. The bite often leaves a painful welt and, in some cases, may cause allergic reactions.
Male yellow flies, however, do not bite. Instead, they feed on nectar and pollen and can contribute to pollination.
According to the South Walton Mosquito District, controlling yellow flies is difficult because their larvae develop in natural wetlands and forested areas where treatment is ineffective.
Officials also say spraying adult yellow flies is not an option.
Daytime spraying, which would be required to target the flies while they are active, could harm pollinators and other beneficial insects.
Instead, the district offers Yellow Fly Kits to residents as a way to reduce activity around individual homes. The kits include traps that attract female yellow flies. Once they land on the trap, they become stuck.
While the traps will not eliminate the insects, officials say they can help reduce the number of flies in smaller areas such as yards and patios.
Yellow Fly Kits will be distributed from April 1 through June 30.
Residents can pick up the kits Monday through Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Proof of South Walton residency is required, and the district limits distribution to one kit per primary residence.
Officials say yellow fly season typically lasts about six weeks, with peak activity between April and June.
Residents can also reduce their chances of being bitten by wearing light-colored clothing, avoiding dark hats and sunglasses that attract the flies, and using insect repellent containing DEET.
Despite the nuisance, mosquito district officials say the season is temporary, and residents can take steps to protect themselves while continuing to enjoy outdoor spaces across South Walton.
