โข๐๏ธ Walton County Commissioners approved $500,000 to build a new Community Senior Center at the South Walton Annex Complex.
โข๐ง The facility will serve Coastal Seniors of Walton County, expanding space for classes and social activities.
โข๐ ๏ธ County engineers will soon evaluate two potential land parcels at the annex to determine the best site for construction.
The Walton County Commissioners voted unanimously at their meeting to move forward with $500,000 in funding for a new Community Senior Center at the South Walton Annex Complex.ย Because the land is currently owned by Walton County, the opportunity to provide and enhance services and activities for seniors has become a necessary priority.
The selected parcel of land will house the activities that the Coastal Seniors of Walton County offers and provide greater opportunity for growth and membership in Walton County. Commissioner Danny Glidewell commented, “This facility for our senior citizens is long overdue. We [Walton County] own the land, and it is zoned appropriately. I think we need to move quickly to get this done.”

On the selected building site, Commissioner Anderson explained that two parcels of land on the complex would work well for construction. He stated that he preferred one of the two proposed parcels, but he indicated that it is essential for county engineers to get to work and assess the best plot of land for breaking ground. Anderson added that he would allocate $500,000 from the county recreational fees he controls as a public official.
Program Manager for the Coastal Seniors, Sonia Roth said, “The location for the senior center will be ideal because there is great access to Hwy 331 and also the property is close to the library, Health Department and other services needed by our seniors. The Coastal Seniors have maintained a positive outlook, contending with our very limited [1 room] meeting space. Scheduling watercolor or exercise classes is so difficult and the limited room for seniors who want to attend is largely limited to our completely inadequate space. With a new facility, more than one activity can be scheduled at any given time. A permanent home will also give our seniors a place to invite friends to join, participate in scheduled activities and gather for social events. Coastal Seniors will be a place where seniors connect and all the more because we have a permanent facility to use. We are thankful for Commissioner Anderson and, we too, want this project to be completed. This is a wonderful asset to Walton County retirees, elderly residents and visitors that make Walton County the place to enjoy life on the emerald coast.”
County Commissioners noted they anticipate county engineers and their teams will begin preliminary investigation of the South Walton Annex property and provide the parcel recommendation to the BCC in a short timeframe.
