Florida man struck in Destin before July 4th celebrations in the city.
Sheriff’s deputies say they believe 66-year-old Destin resident Charles Gallagher leaned into the flip-flop culture in the city – even as he supposedly robbed the Truist Bank on Emerald Coast Parkway in Destin.
Deputies say he used a note to demand cash from workers at the bank.
Deputies allege he got away with a small amount of cash for his trouble and placed it in his black 2017 Maserati. Those same investigators then found the Maserati – without a license plate and a covered-up logo “in an attempt to conceal its identity.”
A search warrant on the car turned up a bag with cash, a light-blue surgical mask like the one the suspect in the bank’s security video was wearing, and a pair of glasses.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, which investigated the crime, Gallagher currently denies any involvement in a robbery.
Gallagher is currently held without bond on charges of robbery without a weapon, a second-degree felony. If the 66-year-old is convicted, he’d face up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
According to court records, Gallagher has experienced financial troubles and issues since 2017. Filings show he has been taken to small claims court by banks and auto insurance companies. Foreclosure proceedings were filed on Gallagher in 2023 and are ongoing.
