“The city just has a relationship with Mr. Byrne and knew what was going in [to the location],” Sjoberg said on the show.

Niceville Planning and Zoning Department employees told Mid Bay News on Jan. 27 that no permits have been pulled just yet for the building. The plot of land is currently zoned C2 Commerical and would not have to seek approval to place a store on the property – other than applying for building permits.

There is no completion date for the project that has been made publicly available. Currently, there are two Wawas in the western Florida Panhandle. One is in Pensacola and another is in Tallahassee. A second Tallahassee location is set to open Jan. 31.

More About Wawa

Wawa is a Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain known for its made-to-order deli selections, coffee, and other products.

The business was founded in 1803 as the Millville Manufacturing Company, a textile business, before transitioning into dairy farming in 1902 under George Wood, who named Wawa Dairy Farms after the local area in Pennsylvania. Initially specializing in home-delivered milk, the company adapted to changing market trends in the 1960s under Grahame Wood, opening its first Wawa Food Market in Folsom, PA, on Apr. 16, 1964.

Wawa Food Markets focuses on fresh food, proprietary coffee blends, and convenience, offering custom hoagies, hot breakfast sandwiches, and beverages. They introduced gasoline services and surcharge-free ATMs to enhance convenience and operate most stores 24/7. Customers can access Wawa products through in-store purchases, mobile ordering, curbside pickup, and delivery. The company continues to expand while emphasizing teamwork, quality, and customer satisfaction.

A single family privately holds the chain.
