A Niceville man is facing charges after deputies say he fled from law enforcement on an electric bicycle while they were attempting to serve an arrest warrant.
Alexander Buena, 21, of Pierre Cove in Niceville, is charged with obstructing an officer without violence and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer with active sirens.
According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened Aug. 9 at approximately 3:07 p.m. as deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant in the area of Alaqua Creek Cove.
Deputies later located Buena riding an electric bicycle near Sweetwater Run and Coldwater Creek Circle. A deputy activated emergency lights and sirens, but authorities say Buena continued riding away.
According to the sheriff’s office, Buena ran multiple stop signs and traveled into the incorrect lane of traffic as he continued to flee.
The pursuit ended near Heritage Gardens Funeral Home and Cemetery, where deputies say Buena struck a curb and fell from the bicycle.
Authorities said Buena then ran from the area on foot.
He eventually surrendered after deputies told him a law enforcement K9 would be deployed, according to the sheriff’s office.
During the investigation, Buena reportedly told deputies that he fled because he believed he was going to get in trouble for riding his electric bicycle too fast.
Buena was arrested on the two charges. The arrest warrant associated with the case is listed as 26-02745.
The charges are allegations, and Buena is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
