👤 Who: Congressman Patronis and the National Transportation Safety Board
🚆 What: A Brightline train collided with an autonomous delivery robot
📅 When: January 15, 2026
📍 Where: Miami, Florida
⚠️ Why: To address safety concerns as autonomous technology expands near critical transportation systems
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Patronis is calling for a federal safety review following a January 15 collision between a Brightline passenger train and an autonomous delivery robot that entered active railroad tracks in Miami.
In a letter sent to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy, Patronis requested detailed information on the agency’s response to the incident and urged a closer examination of how autonomous technologies interact with critical transportation infrastructure.
Although no injuries were reported, Patronis said the crash raises serious concerns as robotic delivery systems and autonomous vehicles continue to expand across urban environments. The Congressman asked whether the incident triggered NTSB reporting requirements, what investigative actions are underway, and whether the agency is conducting a broader review of autonomous vehicles at railroad crossings nationwide.
Patronis also pressed the NTSB to clarify what safety recommendations currently exist to prevent similar incidents and whether different standards should apply to autonomous vehicles carrying human passengers compared to those operating independently.
In his letter, the Congressman emphasized the need for Congress to remain proactive as technology outpaces existing safety frameworks.
“Given the rapid evolution of autonomous technologies, we must ensure that our transportation safety framework evolves as well,” Patronis said. “This incident highlights a gap in our understanding of how autonomous vehicles interact with railroad systems. We must address these risks now before a more serious accident happens.”
Patronis said he plans to work with federal transportation officials and lawmakers to strengthen safety standards and reduce risks tied to autonomous systems operating near rail corridors and other high-risk infrastructure.
The NTSB has not yet publicly released findings related to the collision.
