High school students from Niceville earned statewide recognition for spreading holiday cheer to seniors and veterans through heartfelt decorations and cards.

Niceville Teens Win 2025 Youth Council Excellence Award for Spreading Holiday Cheer to Seniors, Veterans

A group of Niceville high school students made the entire city proud and picked up a statewide award while they were at it.

The Florida League of Cities announced that the Niceville Youth Advisory Council is one of three 2025 Youth Council Excellence Award winners. The honor recognizes student-led projects that make a meaningful difference in Florida communities.

So, what did the teens do? They brought holiday spirit and some much-needed connection to local seniors and veterans during a time of year that can feel especially lonely for some.

The council’s project had two parts: decorating the doors of more than 30 senior residents at the Bob Hope Enlisted Village and writing personalized holiday cards to military veterans. It was a simple idea powered by a big heart.

“They created moments of connection, kindness, and community,” said Cocoa Mayor Michael C. Blake, president of the Florida League of Cities. “I’m incredibly proud of the Niceville Youth Advisory Council for reminding our seniors and veterans that they are seen, valued, and deeply appreciated during the holiday season.”

The Youth Advisory Council is made up of local high schoolers who serve as a junior city board, offering a younger perspective on community issues and learning the ropes of civic leadership along the way.

Niceville’s council shared the win with Ocoee and Satellite Beach youth groups. Each group will receive a $500 prize, a trophy, a feature in Quality Cities magazine, and the League’s website and social media channels.

The Florida League of Cities, which has been around since 1922, advocates for local self-government and helps Florida’s cities solve problems and connect communities.
