Former Niceville Special Teams Coach Lands Position at ULM

Many coaches dream of moving up to the college coaching ranks – Niceville High School class of 2009 graduate and football coach Sean Moorer just got the call-up.

Moorer has made a move to the University of Louisiana – Monroe (ULM) staff, where he will work as a QB analyst for the Warhawks. “It’s always been a goal of mine,” Moorer said over the phone from Monroe, “I started coaching 12 years ago and I wanted to try to make it to college football. I wanted to be able to coach a higher caliber athlete and eventually be able to recruit my own athletes.”

The job came around just like most jobs come to applicants; he heard about the opening through the coaching grapevine and had a connection at ULM. He got the job and quickly moved to northern Louisiana.

I wouldn't be here without the people at Niceville." Moorer said, "From the coaches I've worked with, to the players that play for me, to the administration. Everyone [at Niceville] builds such a great environment. I'm so fortunate to grow up there from a young age. It has made me who I am. A lot of successful people come out of Niceville. I hope to be one of them one day. I'm not there yet, hopefully, I get there."

Moorer's Time at Niceville High School

Moorer spent 16 years on Niceville High School’s football team in one way or another. He played for the Eagles as a defensive back and began to help out with the team after graduation.

He began by helping out the quarterbacks and then moved to defensive backs. For the last three years, he was the special teams’ coordinator under Head Ball Coach Grant Thompson (another NHS Alum).

During his 12 years as a coach, Moorer and the Eagles posted a 118-40 record (74.7% win percentage, for you math wizards) and made a state championship game appearance in 2013. The team lost to the Dwyer Panthers 55-39 to close that year 14-2. Their only other loss that year was to the Crestview Bulldogs in a 17-12 nail-biter at the Eagles Nest.

As he looks forward to the future – he’s thankful to the people who’ve helped him get this far. “I wouldn’t be here without the people at Niceville.” Moorer said, “From the coaches I’ve worked with, to the players that play for me, to the administration. Everyone [at Niceville] builds such a great environment. I’m so fortunate to grow up there from a young age. It has made me who I am. A lot of successful people come out of Niceville. I hope to be one of them one day. I’m not there yet, hopefully, I get there.”

With the Warhawks

Now that he’s (mostly) settled in, Moorer has plenty of work to do to help the ULM Warhawks against their Sun Belt Conference opponents in 2023. The Warhawks had a 4-8 season in 2022 under Florida State Dadgum Legendary Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden’s Brother, Terry. Bowden is 8-16 as the head coach of the Warhawks going into 2023.

The team will start its 2023 campaign against The United States Military Academy at home in Monroe on September the second. Moorer says he looks forward to watching his colleagues on the defensive side of the ball gameplan for Army’s Triple Option offense.

If you want to see Moorer and the Warhawks in person, you’ll likely have to wait until next year. ULM will play against Sun Belt Conference opponents Troy and the University of South Alabama at home in 2023.

The Future

The full-time role with the Warhawks has been what Moorer has waited for. He hopes to turn it into his chance to move up the coaching ranks and lead a team of his own one day. “I just love to compete at the highest level, whatever level that might be. I think that is my draw to college football. It is so competitive,” Moorer said, “everybody’s good. And [coaches] have the opportunity to impact so many people’s lives, particularly young people. That’s what draws me to football, to be honest.”
