Niceville Good Neighbor: Jerry Matthews

In Brief:

  • 🌽 Jerry Matthews, an 86-year-old Navy veteran, shares fresh farm produce from his family with neighbors in need across Niceville.
🏘️ Nominated by neighbor Anna Pugh, Matthews is recognized for his kindness and community spirit as the May Good Neighbor of the Month.
📞 Matthews says he doesn’t seek recognition, but hopes his example encourages others to be generous and neighborly.

Jerry Matthews is The Ryan Cabaniss State Farm Niceville Good Neighbor of the Month for May!

Matthews, an 86-year-old Navy Veteran, now serves his country and community differently.

After his wife passed away four years ago, Matthews found himself making regular trips to his daughter and son-in-law’s farm and bringing back all sorts of fresh produce.

Well, he’s one person, aside from the time every day his other daughter comes to visit with him, so he tends to have plenty of leftovers.

So Matthews has made it a habit to share the fresh produce with whoever needs it around town!

He “checks in when he sees them and always has a kind word,” his neighbor and nominator, Anna Pugh, said.

“I don’t do it for accolades or anything,” Matthews told us over the phone, “my son-in-law grows it and he has an excess of it. I have neighbors who can use it, so I bring it down.”

He hopes his acts of generosity and neighborly-ness can be a positive in the world and encourage others to share their gifts, too. “I would just say, treat them like you want to be treated and try to be neighborly to the people here,” He added.

Congratulations to Jerry from Mid Bay News and thanks to the Ryan Cabaniss State Farm Agency for supporting this program to highlight local community servants!
