Niceville Vendor Fair: May 13, 2023

Lorelai Sallman has an entrepreneurial streak. The teenager at Ruckel Middle School might not have realized it as early as she did – if it weren’t for some of the girls she went to elementary school with.

You see, the girls started making bracelets, and Lorelai became fascinated. She quickly learned how to make them herself – and began to teach others how to do it too.

But it was at her dad’s urging that she decided to take a shot at selling the bracelets to others. “My Dad said, ‘oh, my gosh, you should sell those!’ So I sold them around his work. And now it’s a big thing!”

That’s where the Niceville Bazaar comes into the story. The bazaar, which was previously held at Crosspoint Church, gave Sallman her start. She set out a booth for the first time and sold plenty of bracelets to interested shoppers.

Many people in the Niceville area – associated with the base anyway – know how important it is to test a concept before using it on the battlefield. Like the engineers and test pilots on Eglin Air Force Base, Lorelai used the area as a test range for her business.

Turns out it was pretty successful. It turned a profit! Not bad for an entrepreneur without a driver’s license. It taught her some early lessons about entrepreneurship as well.

“I’ve learned how to be on time, how to save my money and how to keep track of everything,” Sallman said, “ I’ve begun to use planners, binders and budgets, stuff like that.”
