Kelly Humphrey, former teacher of the year at Niceville High School, speaks to the new inductees of Quill and Scroll.

New Members Inducted Into Niceville High School Journalism Honor Society

13 students inducted into revitalized honor society - highlighting growth of journalism program at NHS.

Candle By candle, the newest Niceville High School Chapter members of the Quill and Scroll were inducted Thursday Night. Each new member lighted their candle – a symbol of the light journalism must bring to the truth – from a burgundy candle, representing Niceville High School.

The eleven ladies and two gentlemen are the newest members of the National Journalism Honor Society, which was founded in 1926 to promote the career field to young people around the globe.

Currently, there are more than 14,000 chapters around the world, in all 50 states and almost 30 counties. Students founded a chapter in 1965 at Niceville High School, soon after the school opened.

Kelly Humphrey, an Okaloosa County Teacher of the Year and advisor to The Eagle Echo student newspaper at the school, recalled finding the original charter at the school: “I found it in a warehouse last year,” she told the gathered students and their parents. The chapter remained dormant for years until its recent rekindling.
