More options, more flexibility — the Air Force is reshaping how Airmen stay fit and mission-ready.

New Fitness Options Signal Major Shift in Air Force Readiness

In Brief:

  • The Air Force is updating fitness test options, allowing Airmen to choose between multiple exercises.

  • Diagnostic-only fitness testing will run through June 2026, with official scoring resuming July 1.

  • Fitness scores will again be included in performance briefs beginning in early 2026.

ARLINGTON, Va. — The U.S. Air Force has announced updates to its physical fitness assessment standards, including changes to testing options and a revised implementation timeline aimed at supporting Airmen’s long-term health and readiness.

According to Air Force officials, the updated Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) will allow Airmen to choose between multiple exercise options while maintaining bi-annual testing requirements. One of the key changes from a September 2025 announcement is a shortened diagnostic testing period, which will now end in June 2026.

“We care about the long-term health of our Airmen, and that starts with physical fitness,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Ken Wilsbach said. “The habits Airmen build by working out daily directly impact their quality of life in and out of uniform.”

Under the updated standards, Airmen will have flexibility in each fitness component. Cardiovascular options will include either the traditional 2-mile run or the 20-meter High Aerobic Multi-shuttle Run (HAMR). Strength testing will offer a choice between one minute of push-ups or two minutes of hand-release push-ups, while core strength can be assessed through sit-ups, cross-leg reverse crunches, or a timed forearm plank. Body composition will be measured using a waist-to-height ratio.

From March 1 through June 30, 2026, all fitness assessments will be conducted as diagnostic-only tests, allowing Airmen time to adapt to the new requirements. Official scored testing under the updated standards will resume on July 1, 2026. Fitness testing is currently paused to support the transition.

Changes are also coming to how fitness scores are reflected in performance evaluations. Beginning in February 2026, PFA scores will be included in officer and enlisted performance briefs, starting with colonels, followed by lieutenant colonels, majors, and chief master sergeants in May 2026. Senior airmen whose evaluation periods close in March 2026 will not have PFA scores included.

Officials noted that performance briefs may reflect the most recent PFA score, even if it was completed under previous standards.

Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe emphasized that the updates go beyond readiness metrics.

“Your physical health is important to us, not just as a readiness metric but as a human being as well,” Wolfe said. “When you’re physically healthy, you are not only happier, but in a better position to excel at your job.”

Updated fitness score charts and a revised Air Force Manual 36-2905, outlining the Physical Fitness Program, are expected to be released in the coming months.
