New Fire Response Model Aims to Save Minutes in Emergencies

In Brief:

  • 🚨 What: Implementation of a “boundary drop” emergency response model
  • 📅 When: Starting May 1, 2026
  • 📍 Where: Niceville and Valparaiso areas, including surrounding jurisdictions
  • Why: To reduce response times and improve emergency service efficiency

Niceville, Fla. — A major shift in how emergency calls are handled across the Niceville area is set to begin May 1, with fire agencies adopting a new “boundary drop” response model designed to get help on scene faster.

The Niceville Fire Department, working alongside the East Niceville Fire District and Valparaiso Fire Department, will begin dispatching the closest available unit to an emergency regardless of jurisdictional boundaries.

Previously, agencies responded strictly within their assigned areas, even if another department was physically closer. Officials say that sometimes delayed response times.

Under the new model, GIS mapping was used to determine which unit can reach specific locations fastest. That unit will now be dispatched first, especially for EMS calls and single-engine responses.

Larger incidents, such as structure fires, already rely on multi-agency cooperation, so those responses will remain largely unchanged.

Fire leaders say the shift could cut response times by as much as three to four minutes in some cases, a difference that can be critical in medical emergencies.

Residents across both incorporated and unincorporated areas of Niceville, along with Valparaiso, may begin seeing fire units from neighboring departments responding to calls in their neighborhoods.

Niceville Fire Chief Alex Kukulus said the move reflects a growing partnership among the agencies and a focus on putting residents first.

“When people call 911, they don’t care about the color of the truck or the patch on the firefighter’s shoulder,” Kukulus said. “They just care that a well-trained professional arrives as quickly as possible.”

City officials say the new system is another step toward improving efficiency and strengthening regional cooperation among emergency responders.
