INTERVIEW: Former Niceville Head Coach Will Consult for Area Teams as Offensive Guru

In Brief:

    • 🏈 Former Niceville head coach Grant Thompson has started a new football consulting business, Big Coach Consulting.

    • 🤝 He is currently working with Lincoln High School and Vernon, offering services from film analysis to in-person support.

    • ❤️ Thompson says his goal is to stay connected to the game and continue making an impact on young athletes’ lives.

Former Niceville Head Coach Grant Thompson has leaned into an entrepreneurial streak and has launched a new business – consulting for high school football teams in Florida.

When Sports Illustrated first reported that Thompson would begin to consult for offenses across the Florida Panhandle.

Thompson has long been considered an offensive guru – so his new consulting business, Big Coach Consulting, plans to lean into that.

The time between idea and business took about a week and a half – and Thompson is still iterating in his next act post Niceville High School.

“I still want to be loosely involved. And after a couple of calls and a couple of job offers, I just thought, ‘well, what if I just maybe tried to help a bunch of teams?'”

As of May 12, he has two clients, Tallahassee’s Lincoln High School and Vernon.

“I hope I can help people, which is my favorite part of the job,” he added.

Still – he’s getting used to the business part of the new gig, especially all of the business lingo. “Every school is looking for something a little different. There’s, I guess, different packages that were offering. I’m saying that out loud,” he said with a laugh.

Everything from watching and analyzing practice film to in person visits are on the table.

Now for the Elephant in the Room

So, yes, Thompson is consulting for THAT Lincoln – the one currently in Niceville’s classification. The one that Niceville played and beat twice last year.

It’s a touchy topic, but Thompson wasn’t afraid to address it.

“I spent a lot of time in this town, and I think I’ve done every job you can do in football in this town, just about. I’m going to always bleed maroon and love the ‘Flyin N‘, and I want them to do nothing but have success, whether that was with me there or the next guy at the helm. I think people can have the opinion that they want, but I’m not going to do anything that would ever hurt Niceville. I want Niceville to be good, and I want to help and be involved in football. I think it’s kind of simple as that,” he said.

Legacy

We discussed his legacy after a 64-10 run with the Eagles and the young people he coached over most of the last decade. While he is proud of top-tier talent, like the New York Jets’ Azareye’h Thomas, he hopes that he made an impact with every single kid the program at Niceville High School involved. ” I hope that there’s a large percentage of young men that would think that I wanted nothing but the best for them and to be the best versions of themselves. And they hope that maybe just a little bit of the lessons they learned playing football could benefit and impact them as they grow older start families and careers, and go through trials and tribulations. If that was my legacy, that would be more important than any wins or accolades or awards,” Thompson said.
