With eight weeks of play in the books, some local teams are trying to turn strong seasons into favorable first-round matchups. Others are fighting simply to keep November football within reach.
After more than a month as a first round-visitor in our projections, Choctawhatchee joins Walton as a projected first-round host, while South Walton and Destin would open on the road – according to our model.
Niceville sits just outside the eight-team field in Class 5A.
Class 2A: Walton moves into hosting position; Destin gets another chance

Walton’s most meaningful move isn’t just a change in number. It is a change in location.
The Braves, listed at 5-1, have climbed from the fifth seed to fourth in the Class 2A, Region 1 projection. If they hold that position, Walton would host fifth-seeded Jackson in the first round rather than pack up for a road game.
For a team that opened with five straight wins, protecting that home-field advantage becomes a clear late-season goal. The spreadsheet shows Walton beating Fort Walton Beach 47-24 and Freeport 36-3 before South Walton handed the Braves their first loss, 21-14, in the county rivalry matchup.
That setback has not kept Walton from improving its projected postseason position. Now the task is to keep it. Jay and Catholic are among the opponents listed on Walton’s schedule, with the Catholic matchup offering another test against a team projected near the top of the same region.
Destin’s stakes are more immediate: stay in the field – helped thanks to a delay that would have otherwise seen them risk it all against Walton this past week.
The Sharks, listed at 3-2, have returned to the playoff picture as the seventh seed. Their projected reward is a first-round trip to second-seeded Catholic, which the graphic shows with a 6-1 record.
It would be a rematch with a substantial gap to close, as Catholic whipped Destin 45-8 earlier this year.
Still, the first step for the Sharks is ensuring a rematch, and their first-ever playoff appearance, remains possible. Graceville, Freeport and Bozeman also appear on Destin’s schedule as the season moves toward its finish. Those three contests are winnable for the Sharks.
At the top of the region, Bolles holds the projected No. 1 seed, followed by Catholic and Florida State University High School. Walton sits fourth, ahead of Jackson, Gadsden, Destin and Baldwin.
That leaves the Freeport Bulldogs outside this particular snapshot, without enough information to call them mathematically eliminated.
Class 3A: South Walton’s wins have not settled the seeding debate

South Walton has won plenty. The Seahawks are still waiting for the algorithm to reward them with a single victory.
At 6-1, South Walton occupies the sixth seed in Class 3A, Region 1, one spot behind a Pine Forest team listed at 2-4. That ordering remains despite the Seahawks’ 28-20 win over Pine Forest, as recorded in the spreadsheet.
The head-to-head outcome gives South Walton a compelling argument, but it does not automatically settle a ratings-based playoff projection. In this snapshot, the MaxPreps-based calculation the FHSAA uses to assign playoff seeds still gives Pine Forest the edge.
For the Seahawks, the distinction matters. Remaining sixth would send South Walton to third-seeded Bishop Kenny for its opener. Climbing to fifth would change the projected opponent to fourth-seeded Baker County. Reaching fourth would put a first-round home game in play.
The Seahawks have already shown they can win a close, consequential game, following the Pine Forest victory with their 21-14 win at Walton. Their only loss in the supplied results came against Florida State University High School, 18-15.
The closing schedule offers more opportunities to strengthen their case. The remaining matchups listed in the workbook include a district game at Bay, projected seventh in the region, and a meeting with Catholic – both teams are very good, and victory is no guarantee.
Under the district-representation requirement used in these projections, every district must have a team in the field. Palatka, ranked No. 34 in the graphic and listed at 3-4, takes the eighth seed. Wakulla, listed at 5-2 and ranked No. 19, and Suwannee, listed at 6-2 and ranked No. 28, are the first two out.
That makes the qualification picture especially unforgiving: strong records and higher displayed rankings don’t necessarily earn berths when district representation is factored in.
Raines leads the projected region, followed by Godby, Bishop Kenny and Baker County. Pine Forest, South Walton, Bay and Palatka complete the field.
Class 4A: Choctaw is positioned to bring playoff football home

While Niceville chases a berth, its Okaloosa County rival tries to protect a favorable spot in the bracket.
Choctawhatchee is listed at 4-2 and projected third in Class 4A, Region 1. If that position holds, the Indians would host sixth-seeded Lincoln in the opening round.
Choctaw’s 28-21 victory over Pace and a 49-28 win over Niceville have helped to propel it to homefield advantage (if the playoffs were to start today).
Washington and Gulf Breeze are listed as upcoming district opponents, followed by a matchup with Thompson in Alabama. For Choctaw, the challenge is to finish strongly enough to retain the advantages shown in the projection.
Elsewhere in the supplied 4A picture, Columbia holds the top seed, St. Augustine is fourth and Ed White is fifth. Leon and Middleburg are shown as the first two teams outside the field.
Class 5A: Niceville faces the narrowest path

For Niceville, the question is no longer where a playoff game might be played. It is whether there will be one.
The Eagles are listed at 3-4 and ranked No. 28. They sit ninth in the Region 1 projection — the first team out — with Forest High immediately behind them.
Niceville likely needs to win out to work its way back into the postseason. That statement reflects the urgency of its position, not a guarantee that three victories would be enough.
Crestview, Pace and Dunnellon are the opponents identified in that outlook. The Crestview rivalry matters immediately, while Pace offers a chance to beat a team currently projected in the same regional field. Pace holds the sixth seed and would visit third-seeded Nease if the bracket stayed unchanged.
Niceville has already navigated two district games, beating Navarre 58-29 and edging Tate 34-33. But losses elsewhere on the schedule have left the Eagles on the wrong side of the projected cutoff.
Mandarin leads the supplied 5A projection, followed by Buchholz and Nease. Oakleaf and Evans occupy the fourth and fifth seeds, with Pace, Bartram Trail and Ponte Vedra completing the field.
For Niceville, there is little value in looking past the next result. The Eagles need wins, and even then their final position will depend on how the rest of the race develops.
A local race with very different finish lines
The late-season stakes are clear, even if the final bracket is not.
Walton and Choctaw are trying to keep playoff football at home. South Walton is trying to convert a strong record and a meaningful head-to-head win into better seeding. Destin is trying to hold onto a restored berth. Niceville is trying to force its way back in before the opportunity disappears.
The supplied graphics cover Region 1 in Classes 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A, not every Florida classification. They do not provide a comparable playoff outlook for Baker or Rocky Bayou, so those teams’ postseason positions cannot be established from this material.
For the five local teams at the center of these projections, the remaining weeks will determine whether the current picture becomes a home game, a road trip or a missed opportunity.
