TALLAHASSEE – The office of Governor Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday that U.S. and Florida state flags will be flown at half-staff following reports of the death of country music singer and songwriter Dolly Parton. According to the press release, Parton was 80 years old. The directive applies to all local and state buildings and grounds.
The order, which is effective immediately, will remain in place until sunset on September 1, 2026. A memorandum from the governor’s office stated the action was taken “pursuant to the President’s order” and referenced a corresponding presidential proclamation, indicating the flag-lowering is part of a national observance.
While the U.S. Flag Code traditionally reserves the honor for government officials, military members, and first responders, presidential proclamations have occasionally extended it to prominent public figures. The governor’s office is directing state agencies to comply with the federal directive.
