A Georgia tourist was arrested after deputies say she shot a man in the leg during an argument in Destin on August 17.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office charged 42-year-old Crissy Wilburn of Stone Mountain with domestic violence–related aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and use of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.
Deputies say the shooting happened around 9 p.m. as the couple was loading their car at a home on 60 Crystal Beach Drive. According to investigators, the pair had been arguing earlier in the day about photos found on the victim’s phone.
Wilburn and the victim gave deputies conflicting accounts of what led to the gunfire. The victim told deputies the shooting was an accident. Wilburn, who was sitting in the passenger seat, first said she grabbed the firearm to place it on the floorboard when it discharged and struck the victim, who was standing nearby. She later told deputies the victim grabbed the gun and it went off. Wilburn also claimed the weapon had remained holstered and that she did not know how it ended up pointed toward the victim.
Deputies noted in their report that Wilburn smelled strongly of alcohol, had glassy eyes, and spoke with slurred speech. She refused to provide a breath sample after her arrest.
Investigators also cited inconsistent statements, the couple’s inability to explain how the shooting occurred, and defensive wounds observed on the victim’s hand. Wilburn was taken into custody and booked into the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview.
