Niceville Police Department Chief David Popwell told the Niceville City Council at the April 14th meeting that the investigation into the double homicide that took place in Niceville on February 11th continues.

Chief Popwell told the council two of the people who are suspected of carrying out the shooting are at large.

“We have two in custody and two warrants out and it’s just a matter of time before the Marshalls service picks them up,” Chief Popwell said, “Then it will be wrapped up and we will be in court for the next 15 years.”

According to an ealier statement by Popwell – the shooting was gang and drug related. Niceville Police believe many of the people involved were from Tallahassee and came to Niceville to engage in illegal narcotics activity.

Isaiah Lamar Luna, wounded in the incident, is now in a Leon County jail cell for an unrelated charge. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office booked Luna into custody on February 18th – a week after the shooting. Chief Popwell said Luna now has a public defender representing him. Niceville PD detectives have interviewed him several times.

Two people, Bryson Tyrese Mitchem of Niceville and Brandon Dequan James of Tallahassee, are dead from the shooting.

Both vehicles involved in the shooting and other evidence, including an AK-47 style rifle recovered from Niceville High School property, have been collected and are being scoured for evidence. “They threw it over the fence, and we have it on video,” Chief Popwell said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is also assisting in the investigation.

“I can tell you that the incident was gang-related and it was drug-related,” Chief David Popwell told the Niceville City Council at their meeting Tuesday night.

The incident, a double homicide on February 11th, now involves at least the Niceville Police Department, Leon County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshals Service.

“If you are not in that lifestyle, then you won’t have any issues here in Niceville,” Chief Popwell said.

According to law enforcement, a total of six people were involved in the shooting.

In the meantime, The Marshals service continues to actively seek two more people in the City of Tallahassee that they believe were involved in the shooting.

Finally, Chief Popwell intimated that the Marshals were actively seeking another person of interest. “Another person, not to be named, is being sought,” he said, “there are multiple agencies involved – and some agencies have a no-disclosure policy.”
