Eglin to Detonate Unexploded Bombs Found in Choctawhatchee Bay

Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Six will conduct controlled detonations to dispose of six unexploded World War II-era ordnance (UXOs) on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 in Choctawhatchee Bay. The disposal will take place between 7 a.m. and noon each day, with the 500-pound explosives being neutralized at their current location.

The UXOs, which date back 80 years, were discovered during routine investigations of the Bay Legacy Range. To ensure public safety, a UXO safety zone has been established, and all vessels and water-based activities are required to remain clear of the area during the detonation times.

The U.S. Coast Guard in Destin and the Okaloosa Sheriff’s Office will enforce the safety zone, preventing entry during the operation. Additional information, including safety guidelines, can be found in the Marine Safety Information Bulletin here

Earlier this year, Eglin detonated bombs off the coast of Shalimar in a continued effort to clear the area of ordnance that has infested the bay. Prior to and during World War II, what is now Eglin Air Force Base was a gunnery range for the Army Air Corps.
