Don’t Throw It Away Yet: Free Pickup Returns to Fort Walton Beach

FORT WALTON BEACH — If you’ve been putting off cleaning out the garage, spare bedroom or backyard shed, the City of Fort Walton Beach is giving residents a chance to clear the clutter at no extra cost.

The city’s Sanitation Department will host its semi-annual Neighborhood Pickup Program throughout August, followed by a one-day free tire collection event later in the month. Both programs are available to residential trash customers who live within Fort Walton Beach city limits.

From Aug. 3 through Aug. 27, sanitation crews will collect oversized household items that don’t fit inside standard garbage bins. Residents can place furniture, mattresses, appliances and other bulky household items at the curb on their regularly scheduled yard waste collection day.

Items should be placed away from fire hydrants and above-ground utility boxes to ensure crews can safely collect them.

The city says the free cleanup program is offered twice each year, once in January and again in August, to help residents dispose of large household items responsibly.

Some materials will not be accepted during the neighborhood pickup. Construction and demolition debris, concrete, bricks, glass, tires, and hazardous waste are excluded from the program. Residents needing to dispose of household hazardous waste can use Okaloosa County’s Household Hazardous Waste facility on Ready Avenue.

Later in the month, the city will also offer a free tire pickup day on Friday, Aug. 28.

Residents who would like to participate must schedule a pickup by calling the city’s Solid Waste Division at 850-833-9655 between Monday, Aug. 24, and Friday, Aug. 28.

Tires may be left on the curb for collection and may remain mounted on rims. However, the city will not accept commercial or agricultural tires.

Both programs are free for residential sanitation customers within the City of Fort Walton Beach.

For additional information, residents can contact the City’s Sanitation Division at 850-833-9655.
