PENSACOLA, Fla. – A Guatemalan national has pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge, according to an announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida. Selvin J. Tello-Perez, 25, entered a guilty plea for possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person unlawfully in the country.
Prosecutors claim Tello-Perez was arrested in Okaloosa County in January 2026 after he was found operating an electric scooter with a loaded revolver secured in a fanny pack zip-tied to the handlebars. The government’s statement noted that Tello-Perez had been previously deported and had re-entered the United States without authorization.
In a prepared statement, U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin cast the conviction as a fulfillment of a promise by the current administration to “protect our streets from criminal illegal aliens.” Heekin’s office stated the case was investigated by a combination of federal and local law enforcement agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Tello-Perez is scheduled for sentencing on December 17. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he faces a potential maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison.
