Julissa Lopez, a graduating senior at Choctawhatchee High School, has been awarded a $2,500 STAR Scholarship by the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) Chapter GP of Fort Walton Beach.
The prestigious scholarship recognizes exceptional young women in their final year of high school who plan to attend accredited postsecondary institutions in the U.S. or Canada. Recipients are chosen based on academic excellence, leadership, extracurricular involvement, and community service.
Julissa checked all the boxes—and then some.
A standout scholar and athlete, she graduates Magna Cum Laude, is an Advanced Placement Scholar, and a candidate for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. She also earned the Anne T. Mitchell Award, placed on the President’s List at Northwest Florida State College, and swept her district competitions as a 1st Place Traditional and Olympic Lifter.
Julissa is also known for giving back. Fluent in Spanish and English, she’s regularly served as a translator for new students and has been a key interpreter in both her school and church communities.
This fall, she will begin her studies at Florida State University as a first-semester junior, majoring in political science and economics.
Her parents, Esther Landeros and Marco Lopez, celebrated the news alongside members of P.E.O. Chapter GP, which has supported local students and women’s education since its founding in 1988.
The P.E.O. Sisterhood, which has more than 500,000 members across North America, provides scholarships, grants, and educational support to women. The STAR Scholarship—established in 2009—is one of several programs the group offers to support educational advancement.
