Jamie Wells, a Florida House District 3 candidate, shared his vision for the region in a recent interview with Mid Bay News. The district encompasses most of Santa Rosa County and the northern portion of Okaloosa County. While election dates are still undetermined, Wells is preparing to appear on the ballot in an upcoming Republican primary.
Wells highlighted his background as a 24-year Army veteran, stating, “I spent my career in the infantry and ranger community, four deployments to Iraq.” After retiring from the military, he transitioned to community work, including supporting veterans through a nonprofit organization. His campaign slogan, “The people’s voice, the people’s choice,” reflects his commitment to being a representative who prioritizes the needs of residents over political ambitions.
Policy Priorities
1. Insurance Reform
Wells aims to address rising property insurance costs through a task force comprising insurance and finance professionals. “We want to go after that and find a way to put a control measure on [insurance costs],” Wells said. While open to considering a state-subsidized insurance option, he emphasized the importance of expert input, stating, “I’d rely on a panel of experts to help make those decisions.”
2. Infrastructure and Growth
Wells supports construction and growth but emphasized the need for infrastructure improvements. “I want to make sure that plans are in place, assessed, and funding is available to improve those infrastructures as we move on,” he explained, citing the example of Milton, where thousands of new homes are planned without sufficient roadways or public services.
3. Veteran Resources
Wells advocates for a Level B facility in District 3 to ease pressure on the overburdened Pensacola VA. He described it as a center providing basic medical services and mental health counseling for veterans. “If we had that there locally, that would save time and resources for our local community and the district,” he noted.
4. Mental Health for First Responders
Wells also highlighted the need for mandated mental health counseling for law enforcement officers to reduce stigma and ensure accessibility. “If we mandated that every officer has to go through [counseling], they could share their resources and get the mental health they need,” he said.
Wells concluded by framing his campaign as a departure from career politics, saying, “I’m a patriot, not a politician. As long as you want me there, I’m there working for you.”
