Officials at Eglin Air Force Base reported Wednesday that a deceased person was found inside a burned-out vehicle on base property. According to a brief statement from the 96th Test Wing public affairs office, a security patrol discovered the scene at about 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Range Road 234 and Lewis Turner Boulevard.
The base has not released the identity of the deceased, the type of vehicle involved, or any preliminary details about the cause of the fire or death. Officials stated that the notification process for the next of kin was underway, and they have not indicated whether the individual was military or civilian.
A joint investigation has been opened into the incident. The U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI), the service’s primary felony criminal investigative body, is leading the inquiry alongside the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials have not commented on whether foul play is suspected at this time.
