Ascension adds lung cancer surgeon in Santa Rosa Beach.

SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. – Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast has announced the hiring of Dr. Christopher Ellington, a thoracic surgeon, at its Cancer Center on Mack Bayou Loop. In a press release, the hospital system stated that Ellington’s addition is intended to increase local access to lung cancer treatments for residents in Walton and Okaloosa counties. He will reportedly work alongside the center’s existing team of oncologists.

The organization’s announcement cited statistics claiming more than 700 lung cancer diagnoses and 156 deaths from the disease in the two-county area over the last three years. Trey Abshier, identified as the hospital’s president, was quoted as saying the move aims to improve patient access to care, including minimally invasive procedures. The hospital also noted it provides low-dose CT screenings for lung cancer.

According to the release, Ellington is board-certified in thoracic surgery and has fellowship training in oncology. The hospital claims he utilizes robotic-assisted equipment for surgical procedures, including the DiVinci surgical system and the Ion bronchoscopy platform. Ascension officials said appointments with Dr. Ellington are now available.
